Blood donation for pets:
What you need to know
We’re excited to be hosting our first blood donation clinic for the Canadian Animal Blood Bank in our offices on Saturday, October 27thth from 10am-4pm!
We know that the idea of dog blood donation is a new one for many people, so we’ve compiled a list of the questions we’re asked most often, along with answers. As always, if you have any questions or want more information, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

What is the CABB?
The Canadian Animal Blood Bank is a not for profit organization that facilitates and acquires blood donations from healthy dogs to be used for sick dogs in need of various blood products
Which dogs can donate blood?
Your dog must be between 1 year and 8 years old and weigh at least 25kg (55lbs). It’s also best if your dog has a relatively calm temperament, as they will need to stay fairly still for the donation (about 5 minutes).
How long is the appointment?
The appointment itself is about half an hour as some blood checks will need to be done prior to the actual blood collection.
How is the blood collected and from where?
The same collection system that is used on humans is used for blood donation from dogs; however, for dogs, the blood is taken from the neck area.
Does my dog need to be sedated for this?
No. Most dogs tolerate the procedure very well, since it’s not particularly painful and only lasts about 5 minutes.
Is this a painful or uncomfortable procedure for my dog?
Definitely not. However, dogs who are generally calm and aren’t typically agitated about a vet visit will do best.
What is this blood used for?
Donated blood is stored until a sick dog is in need of a transfusion of a blood product. While most emergency and referral clinics keep blood products in stock from the CABB, it can be delivered to any animal hospital/clinic should they have a sick dog in need of a transfusion. Various blood products can be used from one donation, including whole blood, packed red blood cells, fresh frozen plasma and platelets.
Does my dog have to be a patient of Liberty Village Animal Hospital to become a blood donor at your blood donation clinic?
Not at all! He or she just needs to be deemed healthy by your veterinarian who would also need to sign off on the registration form.
What does my pet get for donating blood?
For your dog’s first donation he or she will receive a bandana, a key chain and AMAZING KARMA for saving other dogs’ lives! (Also, you get bragging rights, because honestly it’s pretty cool to be able to say your dog gave blood.)
Can I be there with my dog when he or she is donating?
Absolutely!
